My Food Obsession - Diet? Lifestyle? Philosophy?

I read once in some British chick lit novel, probably Jane Green, that Americans are food-obsessed. I thought to myself, "Of course we are!". And, what's wrong with that? Absolutely nothing, in my opinion; live what you love. However, as my brother, employed here, might tell you, there can be too much of a good thing. True, true! I would argue though that food obsession does not necessarily lead to obesity. Rather, one can love food without abusing one's body as a result.

Snowpocalyse 2010 Menu

Yes, cabin fever has descended upon the Ballston townhouse. Today, I was supposed to balance the checkbook and organize the paperwork for taxes. Instead, I've been exploring google buzz, blogging, and checking I'm also getting the itch to bake, likely another try at macarons and perhaps strawberry cupcakes for which I have leftover frosting from the last batch. Cabin fever also makes me evaluate what we've consumed for the last few days...frankly, it could have been worse...

Friday (02.05.10) - storm hits approximately at noon

Lunch: Qdoba burrito which C sweetly picks up for me on the way to metro heading home at lunchtime (of course, with the reliability of metro, said burrito arrives more than an hour later after the commute from Metro Center to Ballston)

Dinner: homemade chili - My variation of my mom's of the few recipes I won't share because I make a mean chili. However, I will share that adding 2 tbsp. honey and 1/4 cup lowfat monterey jack to Krusteaz Fat-Free Cornbread mix makes one tasty concoction.

Saturday (02.06.10)

Breakfast: C, again so sweet, walks to the IHOP down the street and gets me multigrain pancakes with blueberries (silly me, I thought that the fruit would be fresh blueberries; fairly certain the butter and sugar in the blueberry compote made up for the multigrain nature of the pancakes). The pancakes were delicious, though the coffee, as previously noted, not so much.

Lunch: Clementine oranges and the other half of the pancakes

Snack: last apple in the house...did not know at the time that produce would not be refreshed within the next few days

Dinner: Salad and South Beach Tortellini Soup; I love soups and stews at times like these.

Sunday (02.07.10)

Breakfast: Luna Bar

Lunch: short trek for Cosi turkey marketplace sandwich, at least some takeout is available

Dinner: preplanned Super Bowl snacks -

Buffalo chicken tenders breaded in Ian's Whole Wheat Bread Crumbs and Fage 0% Yogurt. I did buffalo tofu as well, but the breading did not coat very well. Incidentally, all of the stores (in preparation for both Super Bowl and Snowpocalypse, I presume) were sold out of the Anchor Bar buffalo sauce. Frank's Red Hot proved to be a MUCH better substitute than the Safeway brand sauce, but Anchor Bar is still the best.

Crostini (Panera demi baguette sliced and brushed with olive oil) with white bean spread (so much better than hummus)

Monday (02.08.10)

Breakfast: sleep was more important than eating

Lunch: Our driveway was plowed Sunday afternoon and C's snowboots were leaking every time he walked the dog, so we headed to Tyson's Corner, one of the few acceptable places to avoid cabin fever whilst pushing a stroller. The food court beckoned and a Five Guys cheeseburger hit the spot. The chest pain kicked in less than two minutes after I finished.

Dinner: The threat of more snow was imminent, yet again, and I had Pilates, so Monday night turned into takeout night; Chinese from TNR cafe.

Tuesday (02.09.10)

Breakfast: Egg whites, ham, and toast, swallowed whole while baby took a 15 minute catnap.

Lunch: Leftover buffalo tofu and greens

Dinner: Another South Beach recipe - spinach-stuffed salmon

Wednesday (02.10.10)

Breakfast (of champions): Coffee with rice milk (out of half & half) and leftover tortellini soup

Lunch: egg salad on toast - Who knew that 7/11 sold local eggs? I prefer cage-free, but for 7/11 selection, not bad.

Dinner: looks like flank steak, one of two remaining non-frozen proteins from pre-storm grocery stock up.

Cup a Joe

Just an FYI, IHOP coffee is no Dunkin Donuts, or illy, or Daily Grind, for that matter. Snowtorious B.I.G. limits our available options within walking distance, so I drank it. But, let me tell you, it was not good. We are quite literally applying the any port in a storm analysis here.

I'm Baa-ack!

Where have I been? Well let's see, we moved, had a baby, have not slept in three months, before that, could not stay awake for nine months, and for a while, we paid two mortgages with the fear of job loss in one of the crappiest economies in decades. Thus, not a ton of eating out.

I think, however, we have reached a point where I'm starting to pull myself together and settle in to our new routine. I'm ready to start writing again, and more importantly, eating like a human being again (i.e., booze, sushi, and caffeine). While I suspect the content of this blog may include some new notions now that I'm a mommy, I'll make at least one commitment. No posts on breast-milk vs. formula; while a very politicized and pressure-inducing issue, this is every person's respective own business and not something for public consumption.

I would, however, expect that my readers will see more posts on home-cooked meals. Eating at some of Washington's finer establishments is more challenging now that we have a newborn in tow. Further, I'm on a big kick to eat as much organic, sustainable, local food as possible. Though there are some good choices around town, preparing our meals will be the best way for me to ensure our food is as good for our bodies as possible. Once the little one is on solids, I'm also planning to make baby food with this handy machine. Could be an utter failure - I'll let you know. Micheal Pollan's motto is really catchy though - "Eat food, mostly plants, and less of it" - for both us and baby. I'm hoping this plan helps with dropping the final pregnancy pounds as well.

Other than that, I have finalized plans already to visit Blue Duck Tavern and Ping Pong Dim Sum in the relatively near future. A friend looked into a VOLT reservation, but that was a pipe dream. (Anyone know the secret to living the Bryan Voltaggio dream? Fill me in!) The hubby and I also have plans for as many romantic lunches for two as we can fit into our work weeks.

I also mentioned that we moved, right? We've relocated from the yuppie Clarendon condo to the yuppie Ballston townhome. While we miss our neighborhood standards (Boulevard Woodgrill, Boccato Gelato, Nam Viet), we do enjoy the ability to actually squeeze onto the Orange Line in the morning. Plus, Ballston seems to offer quite the array of take-out options, plus a couple of gems that I'll write about soon.

I hope that some of you will enjoy the new perspective, however. After considering the writing of the next great teen vampire novel, or perhaps opening a little shop of culinary delights (I thought about everything from macaroons to an organic butcher shop), in the end, this girl still dreams of eating well and sharing my insights regarding good eats.
